Iran was prompted to agree to a two—week ceasefire by China's intervention "at the last minute" - Tehran's ally asked to show flexibility and defuse tensions. This was reported by The New York Times with reference to Iranian officials.

Iran was also pushed to cease fire by Pakistan's "desperate attempts" to establish negotiations, as well as Tehran's concern about the economic consequences of strikes on the energy sector.

The sources added that the ceasefire from Iran was approved by Supreme Leader Mojtab Khamenei.
