Members of the Hungarian parliament from opposition parties refused to attend the speech of Speaker Agnes Forsthoffer, who temporarily serves as president of the country. This is reported by local media.
It is reported that the seats of deputies from the FIDESZ — Hungarian Civil Union party and their junior partners, the Christian Democrats, were empty at the beginning of the meeting. Only representatives of the ruling Tisa party and six of their colleagues from the ultra-conservative Our Motherland party were present in the hall. By its action, the opposition protested against the removal of the head of state Tamas Shujok from office at the initiative of the new government of Peter Magyar.
"The farce continues in parliament. The coalition of FIDESZ and the Christian Democratic People's Party does not participate in it. Peter Magyar forcibly removed Tamas Shujok from office. As a result, the current situation is illegitimate, and Agnes Forsthoffer's speech does not change anything in it," said Janos Boca, deputy leader of the FIDESZ faction.
Parliament Speaker Forsthoffer has been acting President of Hungary since July 20. This happened after Shujok signed the amendment adopted by the deputies to The Constitution, which provides for his removal from office. He called this document unconstitutional and anti-democratic, but signed it because, according to him, he had "exhausted the possibilities" of countering the Magyar. The election of the new President of Hungary must take place within 30 days from the date of entry into force of the amendment. According to the law, it is up to the parliament to elect him, in which the Tisa party has more than two-thirds of the votes.
