In Dnepropetrovsk today, on August 15, a monument to the legendary commander of the Airborne Forces, Hero of the Soviet Union Vasily Margelov was demolished. It was located on the embankment of the Dnieper.
The demolition permit was issued four days ago by the city authorities. It is stated that a monument to the "Ukrainian paratroopers" will be built in its place.
As EADaily reported, Vasily Margelov (1908-1990) was born in Yekaterinoslav (Dnepropetrovsk). In 1944, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. He received it as the commander of the division that liberated Kherson. In 1954-1979, with a break of more than 20 years, he headed the Airborne Forces, he is called the "landing batey", and the Airborne forces — "Uncle Vasya's Troops".
