The authorities of South Ossetia are considering raising the retirement age in the republic, said the Minister of Labor and Social Protection of the Republic Oleg Gagloev.
South Ossetia has the lowest retirement age in the world, women retire at 55, men at 60, which is one of the lowest retirement ages in the world, the minister noted. In most countries of the world, the retirement age begins at 60-65 years.
"Many citizens aged 55 and 60 want and strive to continue working. Therefore, on the one hand, why not give them such an opportunity? On the other hand, it will have a positive impact on the budget of the social fund and, accordingly, on the size of pensions," Sputnik Ossetia quotes Gagloev.
Currently, the number of pension recipients in the republic is 6,309 people. In addition, more than half (up to 65 percent) of pensioners receive payments in Russia.
"The number of pensioners will definitely grow in the coming years, and at a great pace," Gagloev said.
According to him, over the past five years (from the end of 2019 to the end of 2024), the growth has amounted to about 35%.
Gagloev explained the expected jump by several factors:
- demographic situation — a large number of people born in certain years will soon retire;
- The retirement age in South Ossetia is relatively low compared to Russia;
- gradual increase in the number of citizens who do not have work experience in The Soviet Union and Russia.
