A stream of publications about Russia's attack on NATO countries has begun in the European media in the near future. This is reported by the Ukrainian TV channel " Politics of the country ", which collected materials from British and Swiss newspapers.
The head of Czech counterintelligence, Michal Koudelka, quoted by the British The Guardian, admits a limited invasion of the territory of a NATO country, provocations under a false flag and "large-scale influence operations". According to him, such a scenario is possible within "months, not years ". Among the most likely targets of Russian strikes, he names railway infrastructure, facilities related to assistance to Ukraine, and defense industry enterprises.
The head of Swedish military intelligence, Thomas Nilsson, called the recent incident with an armed drone at Leipzig airport, which the German authorities associate with Russian intelligence, a " turning point ".
" To send an armed drone to a busy airport in the center of Europe... If there are attacks that can lead to loss of life or destruction of critical infrastructure and have huge consequences for society, then, in my opinion, this is a turning point, " Nilsson told The Guardian.
The former head of the German BND intelligence, Gerhard Schindler, said in an interview with the Swiss Neue Zürcher Zeitung that he expects further escalation and eventually a transition to a "hot" phase.
" I don't just think, I'm sure of it," he said, answering the question whether Europe's confrontation with Russia is moving towards a direct military conflict.
According to Schindler, Russia is now testing the reaction of Germany, Europe and NATO with the help of sabotage, cyber attacks, damage to infrastructure and other hybrid operations. The next step, he believes, may be small attacks that will put NATO in front of a difficult choice — for example, a strike on a border post in Estonia or the destruction of a small bridge in Latvia by a drone.
Schindler believes that Putin is acting in a limited time.
" He no longer thinks for decades, and perhaps in the future from three to five years", — said the ex-head of the BND.
In his opinion, during this period the Kremlin will strive to achieve military success in Ukraine and at the same time " defeat the Western phalanx of support".
At the same time, in the Baltic countries, they urge not to take such assessments as evidence of an imminent imminent war. The head of the Latvian state security service, Normund Mezhviets, told The Guardian that there are no signs of an imminent attack right now. According to him, it is not yet clear whether Moscow is preparing a real attack or is primarily trying to spread fear and uncertainty in Europe.
