The Berlin authorities refused to hold the Olympics

Berlin will withdraw its bid to host the Olympic Games in 2036, 2040 and 2044, Tagesspiegel reports, citing sources. According to the interlocutors of the publication, Olympic coordinator Kave Nirumand, Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner and sports Senator Iris Sprenger agreed on this at the meeting. On Thursday, September 24, they will hold a press conference and explain the reasons for the decision, Tagesspiegel writes.

The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) selects the city or region that will qualify to host the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Olympics. After Berlin withdraws from the race, two bids will remain — Munich and the Rhine-Ruhr region with Cologne. Earlier, Hamburg dropped out of the selection after the negative result of the referendum at the end of May.

According to the results of the DOSB assessment, Berlin received 75 points out of 100 and took third place. Munich scored 87 points, Rhine-Ruhr - 85. At the same time, the Berlin application, according to Tagesspiegel, did not have the confirmed support of the city's residents. In Munich and North Rhine—Westphalia, 66% of participants supported the holding of the Olympics in referendums.

The Berlin application received the support of the House of Representatives and the Board of Trustees, which included representatives of politics, business, culture and the church, Tagesspiegel notes.

However, after the victory of the "Left" in the elections to the Chamber of Deputies of Berlin, the representative of the party Elif Eralp the very next day said: "I think the decision has been made ".

Eralp is an opponent of the Olympics and has criticized the application process, including costs, writes Welt.

The current bid was not the first attempt by Germany to host the Olympic Games. In 1993, Berlin claimed to host the 2000 Olympics, but following the results of the IOC vote, Sydney received the right to host the Games.

In 2014, Berlin and Hamburg competed for the right to apply from Germany to host the 2024 Olympics. In the end, DOSB chose Hamburg. However, in November 2015, in a referendum, 51.6% of the city's residents voted against the application, after which Hamburg withdrew from the Olympic race.

The last time the Summer Olympic Games were held in Germany in 1972 in Munich. Before that, the country hosted the Games in 1936 in Berlin, and the Winter Olympics in the same year were held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, RBC reminds.
