Germany and Finland expressed concern about the rupture of the only direct submarine communication cable between the countries, C-Lion1. This is stated in a joint statement by the parties on the website of the German Foreign Ministry.
"We are deeply concerned about the rupture of the underwater cable connecting Finland and Germany in the Baltic Sea," the German Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on its website.
It is noted that "such an incident immediately raises suspicions of intentional damage."
"A thorough investigation is underway. Our European security is under threat not only because of Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, but also because of the hybrid war by intruders. Protecting our shared critical infrastructure is vital to our security and the sustainability of our societies," the statement emphasizes.
The damage was discovered today, November 18, on the Cinia C-Lion1 underwater cable. This is the first direct cable between Finland and Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea, the previous ones passed through Sweden and Denmark. And this is the only submarine cable going directly from Finland to Central Europe. Its length is about 1.2 thousand km, it runs between Helsinki and Rostock.
