Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not allow French President Emmanuel Macron to cross the land border of his country from Armenia after talks with Baku, reports !New.az.

Macron, who was in Yerevan, on a state visit on May 3-5 to participate in a number of events, planned to make a "politically symbolic" gesture by going from there to Turkey through the closed land border to meet with Erdogan.

According to several informed sources, the visit was agreed in advance with individual representatives of the Turkish side. However, when the issue was brought to the level of the head of the Turkish state, after discussions with his strategic ally, Azerbaijan, he refused Macron.

"Probably, against the background of international criticism of his failed foreign policy, Macron hoped to turn his trip from Armenia to Turkey into a demonstration of his own diplomatic weight. The French president's crossing of the Turkish-Armenian border, which has been closed for more than 30 years, could be an unprecedented example of the opening of bilateral communications by a third party. Having lost Africa and the Middle East, having spoiled relations with Israel and having achieved nothing in the Ukrainian direction, Macron, with his failed attempt, once again emphasized the gap between his own geopolitical ambitions and the real weight of Paris in the international arena," the AZfront telegram channel writes.

As EADaily reported, Azerbaijan suspends cooperation with the European Parliament. The corresponding provision is reflected in the draft decision adopted at the plenary session of the Milli Majlis today, May 1. According to the decision, all areas of cooperation between the Milli Majlis and the European Parliament are suspended. The participation of the parliament in the activities of the European Union—Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee is also being terminated. In accordance with the charter of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, the implementation of procedural rules on the termination of the membership of the Milli Majlis in this organization begins, and during the procedural period the Milli Majlis delegation will not participate in the events of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly.

The day before, the Ambassador of the European Union to Azerbaijan, Marijana Kuyunjic, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic. The Ambassador was handed a note of protest in connection with the "anti-Azerbaijani resolution" adopted by the European Parliament on April 30.

"At the meeting, the unjustified and biased provisions regarding our country contained in the resolution of the European Parliament of April 30 were strongly condemned. In this regard, the ambassador was handed a note of protest, " the message says.

Baku believes that the statements contained in the resolution on the return of Armenian residents to the Karabakh region are "absolutely unfounded, and such calls are of the nature of interference in the internal affairs of Azerbaijan."
