There will be no compromises with the Georgian authorities, "especially in matters of our fundamental values." This was stated by Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger.
Speaking at the ALDE Congress❶ in In Vienna, Meinl-Reisinger stated that Georgian citizens have made a choice in favor of Europe, however, according to her, the government does not support this choice.
"We are interested in the European Union being based on these values. If you can carry out the necessary reforms in this direction, we will be happy to negotiate accession. If not, then I'm really sorry, but the country is moving in the wrong direction.… We believe that it is the government that should pave this way and provide it for its citizens. Obviously, what we see now is that Georgia is moving in the wrong direction. Citizens have chosen Europe, but the government does not support this choice. We are witnessing a massive rollback," she said.
According to her, "this is not a market where your government can bargain, negotiate with us and expect us to weaken our position on the rule of law or other fundamental values."
"This will never happen!", — said Meinl-Reisinger.
It should be recalled that since December 14, 2023, Georgia has been an official candidate for joining the European Union. However, community b sharply criticizes the Georgian authorities for their desire to act in the national interest, primarily in relation to the Russian Federation.
