President Donald Trump in a telephone interview with Axios today, August 27, said that he was not concerned about the possibility of a Russian attack on NATO countries.
As the newspaper notes, European leaders are "extremely concerned and publicly warn that Moscow could test NATO's resolve — and Trump's commitment to Article 5, the alliance's collective defense clause — through a limited attack or other military provocations."
CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Moscow on August 25 and met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Naryshkin. A number of media outlets reported that the visit was an attempt to warn Moscow against an attack on a NATO country.
However, Trump denied these reports, saying that Ratcliffe did not make such warnings.
"It doesn't bother me at all. There are no problems," Trump said, answering a question about a possible Russian provocation against NATO countries.
The president called Ratcliffe's trip "an ordinary business trip" and expressed bewilderment at the media reports.
"Ratcliffe meets with his Russian counterpart every six months or once a year. They have a very good relationship. There were no reports, and nothing unusual happened," Trump said.
