Leading mathematicians in an open statement warned about the dangers of AI

A group of 25 leading mathematicians, laureates of the Fields Prize, issued an open statement stating that artificial intelligence is causing damage to mathematical science and its community.

The message of scientists is published on the Math and AI portal. Experts point out that private companies working in the field of AI tend to use the solution of mathematical problems as a performance test, and this harms the discipline and its circle.

"The desire of artificial intelligence companies to use solving mathematical problems as a performance test is detrimental to the science of mathematics and the mathematical community. The goals of artificial intelligence companies and the goals of the mathematical community seriously diverge, " the statement said.

It is noted that the success of AI in solving complex mathematical problems has become the subject of discussion even outside of mathematical circles.

Scientists emphasize that problem solving is only a "tool and means to achieve the main goal: conceptual understanding and insight ".

Leading mathematicians warn that if AI developers forget about this main task, then this tool may turn against itself.
