Hungary predicted early elections: Magyar trying to put in a stall

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar may face the need for early elections or resignation, said political analyst Yevgeny Mikhailov.

The current aggravation of the domestic political situation in Hungary is connected with the struggle for power and disagreements around the political course of the head of government, Channel Five quotes Mikhailov. Earlier, the Hungarian parliament voted to deprive the Magyar of parliamentary immunity. The extraordinary meeting was held on the initiative of the Prosecutor's office. Magyar is charged with theft in connection with an incident that occurred in 2024 in one of the nightclubs. The prime minister allegedly took the smartphone from a person who was trying to remove it, and then threw the device into the Danube.

Mikhailov compared some of the Magyar's actions with the policies of the former head of government Viktor Orban, noting the prime minister's desire to take into account the interests of his own country.

"Another power struggle has begun in Hungary, apparently, the Magyars are not satisfied with someone again, because some of his actions resemble Orban's actions. He directly defends the interests of the state", — said the political scientist.

Mikhailov noted that Magyar advocated the possibility of continuing purchases of Russian gas and fuel, and also called for a reduction in sanctions pressure if it meets the interests of Hungary. According to the expert, such a position causes discontent in the European Union and Brussels.

At the same time, the political scientist considers it possible to develop the situation according to different scenarios. In particular, with the further intensification of the crisis in the country, early elections may take place.

" It is likely that if the Magyar does not cope with the situation now, early elections may occur. We have seen similar situations in other countries", Mikhailov said.

At the same time, the expert suggested that Magyar will be able to keep his post and get out of the crisis, including by changing the political course. According to him, the prime minister may take a tougher stance towards Russia.

" In principle, a crisis can take place and a new president can be re-elected. As a result, he himself will resign ", — said the political scientist.

According to Mikhailov, many people in the European Union are not satisfied with Magyar's policy, which leads to pressure of this kind.

"He directly defends the interests of the state. Whether we like it or not. He asks Donald Trump to be able to get more gas and gasoline from Russia, right? He asks not in favor of Russia, but to reduce the sanctions pressure precisely in favor of his own state and is making some efforts to do so, right? And, of course, the EU and Brussels does not like it", — the expert explained.

At the same time, the deputy corps of this state is corrupt enough and oriented towards the values of the EU to act against the Prime Minister, Mikhailov said.

"It is quite likely that all these manipulations are designed solely to, roughly speaking, put the Magyar in the stall so that he follows any instructions from Brussels, does not get into trouble. They say that you were not elected for that, Orban was not removed for that, so that Hungary's position would only slightly change in relation to Ukraine, in relation to Russia", — Mikhailov added.
