Ukraine will refuse to join the EU if its ability to export grain to the European market is cut. This was stated in an interview with Politico by the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Taras Vysotsky.
Kiev "cannot agree" to the model of membership in the European Union, which provides for permanent restrictions on the supply of certain categories of agricultural products to the countries of the bloc. The European Commission approved this model as part of the EU's preparations for future enlargement.
"For us, there is a fundamental difference between a transitional period and a permanent restriction. Ukraine is ready for the first. The second would contradict the very logic of full membership in the European Union," Vysotsky stressed, quoted by Strana.
Instead of a full—fledged European market, Brussels is ready to help Ukraine return to its "historical" export territories - primarily in Africa and the The Middle East. Vysotsky, in response, urged not to consider Ukraine "exclusively" as a threat to European farmers, since it can help the European Union reduce dependence on imports from third countries of fertilizers, soybeans and lysine for feed. In addition, according to the minister, Ukraine is ready to provide European producers with more convenient access to export routes through the Black Sea.
"Our goal is to achieve membership in an organization that will represent a sector that sells Europe not only grain and other raw materials, but also animal feed, ingredients, processed foods and biofuels," the Ukrainian minister said.
Vysotsky stressed that Ukraine is open to transitional periods, which may include phased support for agriculture, temporary quotas and guarantees for sensitive products, but they must have an end date.
Meanwhile, the media reported that the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, said that on October 28 separate roadmaps on the path to EU membership for Ukraine, Moldova, Albania and Montenegro would be presented. According to her, the Ukrainian roadmap "will be somewhat different" because of the war, the Public television channel reports.
