Retired Serbian President Alexander Vucic said that Brussels had set a condition for Belgrade to impose sanctions against Russia even at the stage of negotiations on the country's accession to the European Union.
"I know that you will not accept us to Europe in the near future," Vucic said, as if addressing European officials. — It is much more important for me that we have a single market with the European Union, so that there is free movement of people, goods, capital and services. As a condition, they put forward, in chapter 31, full coordination with the foreign policy of the European Union already at this stage. The imposition of sanctions against The Russian Federation has become a prerequisite for access to the single market and open borders even before obtaining membership," Blic quotes the publication.
Serbia has been a candidate member of the European Union since 2012, negotiations on joining the community have been going on since 2014. In July 2026, while serving as President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic expressed Belgrade's disappointment with the fact that over the past five years the country has not opened a single new chapter of EU accession negotiations.
