Near Kupyansk, the war moved underground. It is reported by The Wall Street Journal.
"The Ukrainian and Russian military are fighting in the old Soviet pipelines at a depth of several meters. The distance between the opponents is sometimes reduced to four meters," the publication says, quoted by UNIAN.
According to the newspaper, Russian fighters use underground pipes to cross kilometers unnoticed, enter the rear of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and launch drones from there. On the surface, it would be almost impossible to do this due to constant surveillance from UAVs.
At first, the Ukrainian militants tried to destroy the exits from the pipes with the help of artillery and aviation, but the Russians simply made new holes. As a result, a "full-fledged war underground" began, the newspaper reports.
According to her, Russian fighters equipped machine-gun positions inside pipes with a diameter of about 1.2 m, barricades of sandbags and allegedly even living quarters where they "spent months." The Ukrainian Armed Forces are allegedly sending ground drones with explosives and remotely controlled machine guns there.
Some Ukrainian militants admit that they prefer to fight in cramped dark pipes, rather than on the surface, where drones are constantly hunting for them.
Ukrainian commanders claim that Russia is allegedly already creating special forces for underground warfare. Such battles may spread to other parts of the front, and Soviet pipelines stretch, among other things, towards Poland and the Baltic states, the WSJ notes with a distant hint.
As EADaily reported, the Russian army was advancing through Kupyansk after a special operation to enter the city via a non-working gas pipeline.

Orpo said that Russia sent him a personal message to Kiev.
