Ukraine is waiting for another blow after the war, the demographer warned

Dmytro Shushpanov, head of the Department of the Institute of Demography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, said that the birth rate in the first half of 2026 in the country decreased by 17%.

According to him, the rate of decline in the birth rate has increased significantly. In six months, only 73 thousand children were born.

Shushpanov warns that attracting women to serve in the army will further reduce the country's reproductive potential.

Since July, the population of Ukraine has decreased by another 500 thousand people, the demographer said. And after the war, Ukraine's demography is waiting for another blow — their husbands will leave for women who have gone abroad, he predicts.
