Belarus’ approval of a Russian air base in its territory is quite a desirable solution for Russia taking into account that the USA is increasing funding of its contingent in Eastern Europe, editor of the National Defense magazine Igor Korotchenko has told EADaily on Feb 8.
“There have been preliminary agreements with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to deploy the air base. However, now the question is suspended. I think that deploying the air base is a vita issue in terms of military interests of the Union State, Russia and Belarus. It is a national security issue both for Moscow and Minsk. Hopefully, our Belarusian colleagues will fulfil the agreements despite the current political situation and willingness to be liked in Europe,” Korotchenko continued.
Being a wise politician, Alexander Lukashenko needs to comprehend that he never be close to the West, the expert believes.
“At any possibility, the USA and European Union will launch the color-revolution mechanism in Minsk in order to oust Lukashenko, and his fate will be more grievous. He needs to understand that the only support and the only ally for him is Russia, together with which he can preserve the national sovereignty of Belarus,” he concluded.
Earlier, Minsk refused to deploy the Russian air base despite previous agreements with Moscow.
