In the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan, a partial collapse of the recently commissioned Hongqi Bridge occurred. This is reported by the Reuters portal.

Local authorities say that no one was injured as a result of the incident, as security measures were taken.

About a day before the collapse, the authorities of the city of Markang completely blocked traffic on the 758-meter bridge, as cracks were found on the adjacent slopes and road surface, and the displacement of layers of the mountain massif was also noticed. A state of emergency has been introduced in the region. According to the official statement of the Markang administration, on November 11 the situation became critical — a landslide led to mudflows, which caused the destruction of the access overpass and a section of the roadway.

The bridge was of strategic importance as it connected the central regions of the country with the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The Hongqi Bridge was built by Sichuan Road & Bridge Group. The construction was completed at the beginning of this year.
