Republicans in The US Senate rejected a resolution on military powers prohibiting President Donald Trump from using military force against Venezuela, the decisive vote against the initiative was given by Vice President Jay Dee Vance. It is reported by The Hill.
The vote ended with a score of 50-50, after which Vance arrived at the Capitol and exercised his casting vote, which led to the rejection of the bill.
The day before, two Republican senators, Josh Hawley from Missouri and Todd Young from Indiana, changed their position and opposed the resolution. The Hill notes that this happened after pressure from Trump, who had previously publicly criticized them for supporting the initiative. The senators themselves said they had changed their position after Secretary of State Marco Rubio's statement that American troops in Venezuela does not, and if they enter the country, the administration will seek Congressional approval for this.
In December, the US House of Representatives did not pass two resolutions prohibiting military action against Venezuela without the consent of Congress.
The first provided for the withdrawal of American troops from combat operations with "any terrorist organization designated by the president in the Western Hemisphere," unless authorized by Congress. It was rejected — 216 against and 210 for. The second also demanded the withdrawal of troops from hostilities with Venezuela. 211 voted for it, 213 voted against it.
Before that, in November, the US Senate rejected a similar resolution depriving the president of the right to take military action against Venezuela without congressional approval (51 vs. 49).
On January 3, the US military conducted an operation during which they captured and took out of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in the United States. Vice President Delcy Rodriguez became the interim leader of the country.
