Democratic Senator Chris Murphy said that the administration of US President Donald Trump has "lost control" of the war with Iran.
"It is absolutely clear now that Trump has lost control of this war. He made a big miscalculation in assessing Iran's ability to respond. The region is on fire," Murphy wrote on the social network.
According to him, one of the key problems was the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran.
"Trump was confident that Iran would not close the strait. He was wrong. If the strait remains closed, it will lead to a global recession," the senator said.
He claims that the US does not have a clear plan on how to restore shipping. The senator also said that the war is increasingly turning into a "drone war," and Iran is capable of striking the region's oil infrastructure for a long time. According to Murphy, the conflict could escalate into a broader regional war. He pointed to attacks by Iran-allied groups on Israel and American facilities in Iraq, as well as the risk of escalation in Lebanon, Syria and Yemen.
"Trump has no plan to end the war. An invasion of earth would mean Armageddon — thousands of dead Americans," the senator said.
Murphy called on the presidential administration to stop the military operation.
"Trump has lost control of the war. The best thing he can do now is to reduce losses and complete it," Murphy writes.
