The atmosphere in the negotiations on migration at the EU summit is "terrible". This is reported by the European edition of Politico with reference to diplomats.
According to the publication, the negotiations on the sidelines of the EU summit were fierce, conducted in a rough form and were "unworthy of a meeting of the European Council." As the two diplomats noted, during the discussion of the draft agreement, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Czech Prime Minister Andrei Babis used "extremely harsh expressions" and linked the policy of tightening migration with the "protection of Western civilization." Another diplomat stressed that the debate was "emotional and politicized," which was necessary to "bring the discussion closer to the real demands of voters." At the same time, according to Politico, the chairman of the European Council, Antonio Costa, preferred not to interfere in fierce disputes.
Recall that migration policy is one of the most problematic issues in the EU. Earlier, the leaders of Italy, Poland and Denmark proposed for the first time in the history of the European Union to include in the text of the final statement on migration the phrase that illegal migration is associated with the crime rate in Europe. The project was supported by 12 countries, but French President Emmanuel Macron, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez spoke out against it.
