A critical American radar has suffered significant damage as a result of an Iranian attack on the Prince Sultan airbase in Saudi Arabia, CNN reports, citing new satellite images.

The images show traces of charring and missing fragments of the antenna after the March 1 strike, the TV channel writes, noting that the AN/TPY-2 radar is an essential element of the high-tech American THAAD missile defense system.

CNN recalls that since then the base has been subjected to numerous Iranian attacks, including on March 27, when an American E-3 AWACS radar aircraft and a tanker aircraft were attacked. As a result of this attack, at least 10 American servicemen were injured.,

The channel emphasizes that the attack on the radar was part of a series of attacks by Iran aimed at reducing the ability of the United States to detect approaching missiles and drones. In particular, the Iranian strikes destroyed another American AN/TPY-2 radar in Jordan and damaged a stationary early warning radar in Qatar, the construction of which cost more than $ 1 billion.

According to the US Missile Defense Agency, which is responsible for the THAAD program, the cost of the AN/TPY-2 radar is 136 million dollars, Interfax said.
