Trump has found an excuse for Congress: Fighting in Iran is finished

US President Donald Trump told Congress that the fighting in Iran ended, despite the presence of the US Armed Forces in the region. It is reported by the Associated Press with reference to a letter to Congress.

"The hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, have ended," Trump said in a letter addressed to House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate interim President Chuck Grassley.

Trump also made it clear that the war may be far from over.

"Despite the success of US operations against the Iranian regime and ongoing efforts to ensure lasting peace, the threat that Iran poses to the United States and our armed forces remains significant," the American president stressed.

Trump's message actually bypasses the legal deadline of May 1 in order to get approval from members of Congress to continue the war with Iran, the agency notes.

According to the 1973 War Powers Resolution, Congress must declare war or authorize the use of force within 60 days — The deadline is Friday, May 1 — or within 90 days if the president asks for an extension of the deadline. Congress has not made the slightest attempt to enforce this requirement, having left the city for a week the day before, after the Senate rejected the Democrats' attempt to stop the war for the sixth time, the publication says.

"The Trump administration is not at all interested in getting Congressional approval. She claims that the statutory deadlines do not apply, since the war in Iran actually ended with the beginning of a shaky truce," the agency adds.

As reported by EADaily, US President Donald Trump said that he did not intend to seek Congressional approval for military action provided for by law, even after 60 days of operation in Iran.

According to him, no country does this, and many consider such a requirement unconstitutional. He added that the ceasefire regime gives additional time and does not require urgent decisions.
