USA and Iran has agreed on a memorandum and The Strait of Hormuz remains at the center of the agreement. However, Iran is not going to return everything to normal. The free passage will last only 60 days — while negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program are underway.
"Congratulations to everyone! I hereby fully authorize the duty-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz and at the same time authorize the immediate lifting of the US naval blockade," Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The Supreme National Security Council of Iran also confirmed that the blockade will be lifted, including the American one.
The US President promised that the strait would open by Friday, when the memorandum would be signed and cleared.
"The shipping industry needs to be confident," Rockford Weitz, a professor practicing marine studies at the Fletcher School at Tufts University, told Al Jazeera.[1] "Only a small number will pass at first, and then, if everything goes well, more."
However, even under the most optimistic scenario, according to Weitz, it may take several months before shipping returns to normal levels.
Although, in accordance with international law, charging for passage in natural straits is prohibited, countries through whose territorial waters vessels pass may charge for services provided to vessels, Al Jazeera noted.
And today, the Fars news agency reported that Tehran, in the final moments of negotiations on the agreement, added to it a clause on the introduction of fees for maritime services in Strait of Hormuz — in 60 days.
"The use of the term "maritime services" means that the United States has agreed to pay fees to Iran," the source told the Iranian agency.
According to him, it's not about the fee for the passage. Iran will offer safety, navigation, environmental and insurance services, but will use the revenues from commercial shipping for economic development.
Iran shares the Strait of Hormuz with Oman and it is not yet clear how Tehran is going to keep the payment. US President Donald Trump, however, declares that the passage will be free.
As EADaily reported , after the start of the Iranian war , the Strait of Hormuz stood up and Iran has offered to conduct vessels unrelated to the United States and Israel through its territorial waters for money. Reuters reported that fees from tankers amounted to $ 2-3 million.
