The events unfolded on a hot afternoon on July 8 in the Palestinian village of Zanuta, where a member of the House of Representatives from California, Ro Hanna, arrived on a humanitarian mission. He wanted to see the ruins of a school for Palestinian children destroyed by Israeli settlers in 2023 — at the same time the Jews drove dozens of Palestinians out of their homes. Standing among the ruins, one of Hanna's employees noticed an Israeli with a big smile on his face and a machine gun on his shoulder, who was looking at the group through a broken window. Hannah, his employee, the driver and the security guard hurried back to their van. However, the Israelis parked their car right in front of them, blocking the exit to a narrow dirt road.

For the next hour and a half, Israeli settlers armed with American M4 assault rifles intimidated the congressman and his group. They did not let them leave the village, laughed and insulted them, kicked the tires of the van and looked inside, filming the group on video. The guard identified the men as members of the Hilltop Youth, an extremist settler group with a history of violent raids, which caused even more concern for the delegation.

Then the IDF military joined them, who ignored the requests of the American politician to resolve the situation. It was only after a call to the US Embassy that the settlers were driven away.

In the past, there have already been precedents for attacks on European diplomats in the West Bank. However, for the first time an American congressman was under threat of execution, the publication points out.

It should be noted that Ro Khanna is a representative of the left wing of the Democratic Party, known for his anti—war position: in 2022, the congressman issued open letters criticizing the conduct of the war with Russia on Ukraine. And since 2023, Hanna has constantly advocated a revision of relations with Israel and a refusal to escalate against Iran.

As a result, after this incident, Hanna turned out to be psychologically "severely traumatized" and now promises to fight the Israeli lobby even more actively.
