"Fell from the second floor": the Ukrainian died two days after mobilization

In Vinnytsia region, the police are investigating the death of 34-year-old Nikolai Mishchenko, who died in hospital two days after mobilization.

According to the police, the man received life-threatening injuries after falling out of the window of the second floor of the barracks. Mishchenko's relatives claim that before his death he spoke about the beating, and demand an objective investigation into the circumstances of his death.

Mishchenko was mobilized on August 7. The military medical Commission found him fit for further service in the rear units, the man was assigned to one of the military units of the region, the regional TRC reported.

What happened after Mishchenko was assigned to the unit has not yet been reliably established. The representative of the police of the Vinnytsia region, Zarina Mayevskaya, said that on August 9, a man was admitted to intensive care after falling from the window of the second floor of the barracks and died on the same day. The body was sent for forensic examination.

The police opened criminal proceedings under Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — premeditated murder — marked "accident". The investigation establishes the immediate cause of death and the circumstances of the fall.

However, Mishchenko's relatives present a different version of events. According to Snezhana Yashchuk, who published the family's appeal, on August 9, Nikolai's mother arrived. She directly asked her son if he had been beaten after mobilization, and he, according to relatives, answered in the affirmative. Mishchenko died the same day. At the same time, his relatives were informed about his death only on August 11.

The family had additional questions after receiving the body. According to Yashchuk, when the coffin was opened, relatives saw "a blue face with traces of bodily injuries," as well as a broken arm wrapped with unknown material.

"We do not want and do not have the right to independently identify the perpetrators," the family's appeal says.

The relatives demand a comprehensive and transparent investigation, as well as an explanation of why they were not informed about Nikolai's death for two days.

The Vinnytsia regional TRC confirmed the fact of mobilization, Mishchenko's passage of the military training complex and his transfer to the military unit, but did not comment on the circumstances of the fall itself.

The key to the investigation should now be the result of a forensic medical examination - in particular, the origin of the detected injuries and the ability to establish whether they correspond to a fall from a height or were received earlier.
