US President Donald Trump signed a law on the introduction of possible new sanctions against Russia, the White House said; the measures themselves will not take effect automatically — they can only be introduced by the American leader at his discretion. The initiative authored by the late Senator Lindsey Graham was previously supported by the Senate and The U.S. House of Representatives.

"The President signed the law: H.R. 5334, "The Lindsey O. Graham Law of 2026 on the Imposition of Sanctions against Russia and Iran", which authorizes and expands the statutory sanctions, duties and prohibitions against Russia, as well as extends the existing sanctions against Iran, " the White House said. the house.

The main feature of the law is the broad powers of the President in the application of secondary duties. Trump will be able to determine the timing of their introduction and size, as well as provide individual countries with exceptions to restrictions without prior agreement with Congress.

In addition, the law allows Trump to terminate the sanctions and duties provided for by him if the conditions established by the document related to the conclusion of a peace agreement on Ukraine and the cessation of hostilities are fulfilled. The White House previously called the possibility of ending sanctions after reaching a peace agreement one of the key provisions of the initiative, along with the president's broad powers to grant exceptions to restrictions.

The law provides for the possibility of imposing additional duties of up to 100% on imports to the United States from countries that fall under the criteria of the largest buyers of Russian oil and gas and will continue to purchase them. Separately, duties of up to 500% are provided for goods of Russian origin imported directly into the United States.
