The European Union does not abandon its intentions to shift its problems in the form of illegal migrants to Uzbekistan. Politico writes about this.

According to the newspaper, Greece, Denmark, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands plan to implement a pilot project from 2027: migrants who have been denied asylum will either have to return to their homeland or go to a third country located outside the EU. European diplomats, who wished to remain anonymous, mention Rwanda, Uganda and Uzbekistan as possible destinations for resettlement.

The article states that the purpose of the plan proposed for implementation in five countries is not to build closed centers for the repatriation of migrants from Uzbekistan. Instead, it is proposed to conclude an agreement with Tashkent on the reception of migrants who have been denied asylum in the European Union. The terms of such an agreement will be determined by the Uzbek authorities with the participation of international organizations and funding from the EU. These conditions may include both the creation of temporary camps for migrants and the development of comprehensive integration programs.

Five states of the European Union plan to introduce a pilot project in the first half of 2027, completing its deployment in the second half of the same year. At this time, Greece will preside over the The Council of the EU. The initiators will have to settle financing issues and develop mechanisms to protect the rights of migrants.

Greek Minister of Immigration and Asylum Thanos Plevris praised the strict measures of the migration policy of US President Donald Trump. He also noted that since June, the Pact on Migration and Asylum has entered into force in the European Union. This document simplifies the procedures for processing asylum applications and refusals, and also provides for the possibility of deportation of migrants to safe third countries if certain conditions are met.

Uzbekistan and the European Union cooperate in the field of migration on the basis of an Agreement on Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation signed in October 2025. This document opens up opportunities for discussing readmission issues, that is, the return of Uzbek citizens staying in the territory. The EU illegally, as well as to simplify the visa regime, the process of which has already begun.

In June, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan denied the existence of negotiations with the European Union on the creation of centers for migrants subject to deportation. Nevertheless, the country has concluded agreements with Germany and Austria allowing the transit movement of migrants from the EU through Uzbekistan to third countries.
