A story has happened in British politics that would have seemed surreal until recently, said Middle East expert Alexander Kargin.
"In the by-elections to the British parliament, a Muslim of Somali origin, Sagal Abdi-Wali, defeated a Jew, Zack Polanski, and in Israel they supported Abdi-Wali. The fact is that it was Polanski who was a much more radical opponent of Israel!" the political scientist writes in the telegram channel.
The elections were held in the London district, where the deputy seat of former Prime Minister Keir Starmer was vacated. Abdi-Wali represented the Labor Party, and Polanski — led by him The Green Party. That is, both from the left of the political spectrum.
Shortly before the vote, Polanski refused to recognize Israel's right to exist, and his party adopted a resolution essentially in solidarity with the position of their leader.
"At the same time, at a meeting with Jewish voters, it was the Muslim woman Abdi-Wali who took a more moderate position, while Polanski's statements caused outrage among those present. Election result: Abdi-Wali won by defeating Polanski," Kargin said.
