On Sunday, January 26, an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo will be held, the newspaper Le Monde reports.
The relevant decision was made against the background of intensified hostilities on the territory of the state. The UN Security Council originally planned to hold a meeting on Monday, January 27.
Relations between the two countries have deteriorated after DR Congo accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebel group, which is advancing in the provinces of North and South Kivu in the east of the country.
During Saturday, January 25, there were fierce clashes between rebel forces and the Congolese army on the outskirts of the city of Goma. Sources in the Congolese army claimed that the offensive was thwarted. However, according to a senior intelligence source, Rwanda "wants to seize Goma before the UN Security Council meeting."
On the same day, the Foreign Ministry of DR Congo immediately recalled its diplomats from the capital of Rwanda, Kigali, and announced the closure of the Rwandan Embassy in Kinshasa.
