The United States does not intend to continue subsidizing NATO allies, they must take care of their own security. This was stated in an interview with Fox News by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
"The only thing that threatens NATO is the fact that we have NATO allies who do not have enough armed forces or whose armed forces are not strong enough because they [countries] did not spend money on them. There are rich countries, especially in Western Europe, which have plenty of money and they should spend it on national security, but this is not happening. There are countries that spend 1.5% of the size of their economy, and we cannot continue to subsidize them. This is unfair and unsustainable," Rubio said, quoted by TASS.
At the same time, the head of the State Department dismissed the claim that the United States wants to leave Europe.
"We are telling them [Europe] that we need to do more, because this is their continent," Rubio stressed.
