It is correct to call Britain that way, because in the case of Great Britain, this is the only example when a country calls itself great. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a press conference on the results of Russian diplomacy in 2025.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, passing the floor to a Sky News journalist, noted that when mentioning colonialism and the problems of island states, it is worthwhile to give the floor to British media representatives. Lavrov drew attention to the fact that this is the correct name of the state.
"I believe that Britain should be called Britain, because Great Britain is the only example when a country calls itself great. Another example is the Libyan Jamahiriya, but it no longer exists," the foreign minister said.
Recall that the Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, also called the Great Jamahiriya, existed since 1977. In 2011, after the death of its leader Muammar Gaddafi, the state ceased to exist, and in 2013 it was renamed The state of Libya.
