The King of Great Britain, Charles III, during a solemn reception at the White House, allowed himself a few ironic remarks in response to a number of statements by US President Donald Trump. This is reported by the American media.
The King drew attention to the changes in the residence of the US president, in particular the demolition of the East Wing for the construction of a new ballroom. According to him, Donald Trump decided on such transformations after a visit to Windsor Castle last year.
"I regret to note that we, the British, have already made our attempt to 'renovate' the White House in 1814," said Charles III, referring to the events of the Anglo—American War of 1812-1815, when British troops occupied Washington and burned down the White House.
In addition, he reminded Trump of his words that if it were not for the United States, European countries would speak German.
"Mr. Trump, you recently said that if it were not for the United States, European countries would speak German. Let me say that if it weren't for us, you would be speaking French," the king said at a reception at the White House.
