The EU sanctions that have been imposed on the Russian Federation to date have no legal effect from the point of view of international law.
Such an unexpected confession was made by the representative of the European Union on sanctions, David O'Sullivan. His words are reported by the Ukrainian edition of Kyiv Independent.
He stressed that the anti-Russian restrictions of the European Union cannot be recognized as legitimate, since they are not authorized by the United Nations (UN).
"Since the sanctions do not have a UN mandate, therefore legally binding, according to international law, they also do not have," the EU representative said.
He stated that the "moral and economic strength" of the sanctions is due solely to the presence of a "broad coalition" supporting Ukraine.
Earlier, EADaily reported that the authorities of Italy and France criticized the initiative to ban SMO participants and veterans from entering the European Union.
