German battery manufacturer Varta AG has filed for bankruptcy. This is reported by the agency "Yeni Safak".
According to the publication, Varta AG has declared bankruptcy along with three of its subsidiaries. This happened after the key shareholders — Porsche and Austrian investor Michael Toiner — decided not to allocate additional financing.
Varta has been on the verge of bankruptcy for the second time in the last two years. Even after the previous restructuring, the financial situation of the company has not improved.
The key event was May 2026, when Apple stopped cooperating with Varta as a supplier of batteries for AirPods and turned to more budget Chinese manufacturers.
As a result of the loss of a major customer, Varta was forced to stop production at the Nerdlingen plant. This decision resulted in the dismissal of approximately 350 employees.
The company's financial problems are associated with increased competition from Asian manufacturers, an increase in production costs in Germany and a drop in demand for European batteries in the world.
