The Permanent Representatives of Russia and the United States to the UN accused the President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Berbok, of exceeding her authority. This is reported by TC "Bild in Russian"❶ today, August 21st.
Russia is concerned about "the role that the President of the General Assembly is trying to appropriate," said Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia. Thus, he joined the sharp criticism from the deputy US Ambassador Jennifer Lochetta, who, among other things, accused Burbok of "hypocrisy."
The current Secretary General Antonio Guterres leaves his post at the end of the year. Now eight candidates are applying for the position. The decisive presentation of candidates for the post of UN Secretary—General is the duty and right of the UN Security Council. The members of the Council, including Russia and the United States, do not publicly agree on the candidacy. After that, the candidate is usually approved by the General Assembly of 193 UN member States.
This time Annalena Berbok organized public polls of candidates and prepared letters to The Security Council regarding the selection procedure. Then suddenly she offered to vote for the candidates. In addition, she asked the Security Council not to consider candidates who had not previously participated in the dialogue with the General Assembly.
Jennifer Lochetta called Burbock's actions "irresponsible" and also "abuse of authority." She recalled that the Security Council may consider candidates "who have never participated in the General Assembly dialogue." According to her, Burbok considers himself a "diplomatic superstar."
"President Burbok's actions demonstrate hypocrisy and generally cast a bad light on the work of the General Assembly," Lochetta said.
