The project of the second gas pipeline from Russia to China has received a new name. This was announced by the Minister of Energy of Russia Sergey Tsivilev.
"You know that now the Power of Siberia is working at full capacity, we are at the final stage of the transition to construction — it used to be called the Power of Siberia — 2 project, thanks to Vladimir Vladimirovich, he called it more correctly — The Power of Baikal. These are also export flows," Sergei Tsivilev said at a meeting of the Commission of the State Council of the Russian Federation in the Energy sector within the framework of the Eastern Economic Forum, Interfax reports.
The export gas pipeline project is part of the Eastern Gas Supply System (ESG) project, which will combine production centers in the east of the country with the existing Unified Gas Supply System and ensure the supply of mains gas to regions that previously had no access to it.
"The demand of the Far East for gas this year alone was estimated at 9-10 billion cubic meters. By 2035, we see that the demand for development rates will reach 34 billion cubic meters. meters. Gazprom also needs to fulfill export obligations, and the gas resource is not unlimited," the minister said.
According to him, the president has set a task — first of all, Russia's needs must be met, but a reasonable balance must be found.
Now the "Power of Baikal" will become the second gas pipeline from Russia to China. Its capacity is estimated at 50 billion cubic meters. A year ago, the head of Gazprom, Alexey Miller, announced the signing of a binding memorandum with a Chinese state-owned company, and in China itself the project was included in the five-year development plan of the country. However, the contract for the supply of gas, without which construction will not begin, has not yet been signed. Experts note that negotiations are continuing and China is striving to reduce prices as much as possible.
