Rosatom was technically denied additional uranium from Kazakhstan, China agreed

The shareholders of Kazatomprom did not support the sale of uranium to the Russian subsidiary of Rosatom, but agreed on the supply of Chinese SNURDC.

According to the national company Kazatomprom, at the extraordinary general meeting, shareholders voted for transactions with Uranium One and SNURDC.

"Regarding item No. 1 of the agenda of the VOSA (extraordinary meeting of shareholders), it was decided to conclude a transaction in which NAC Kazatomprom JSC has an interest and which, together with related transactions, is a major transaction, namely: a spot purchase and sale agreement for natural uranium concentrates with State Nuclear Uranium Resource Development Company Limited (SNURDC)," the Kazakh national company reports.

But the daughter of Rosatom was denied the contract.

"The decision on item No. 2 of the agenda "On the conclusion of a major transaction in which NAC Kazatomprom JSC has an interest — a contract for the supply of natural uranium in the form of U3O8 with Uranium One Group JSC was not made, as 88.34% of voting shares abstained from voting. A simple majority of votes was required to make a decision on this issue," Kazatomprom said.

If 88.34% abstained, 6.27% opposed it, and 5.39% supported it. The Chinese contract was supported by 88.63%.

It is not known what kind of uranium supplies we are talking about. Probably, the shareholders were deciding on the issue of selling additional volumes of uranium owned by Kazatomprom.

Russia is not a major uranium miner, and Kazakhstan is one of the main sources for Rosatom. At the same time, the Russian state corporation, through Uranium One, participates in four The joint venture is located in a Central Asian country and has the second largest share in the country's production after Kazatomprom itself — 21.3% or 5.5 thousand tons.

China, in turn, is actively entering the Kazakh market and, for example, bought shares in several projects from Uranium One in 2024. As a result, China's share in Kazakhstan's production amounted to 8.6% in 2025, or 2.2 thousand tons.
