It is time to remind Taiwan of its promises and obligations to Lithuania. This was stated by Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginene.
"The main mistake was made when, running ahead of the train, we hurried and opened a representative office under a name that no one in the European Union has ever had before — thereby finally severing any, even business relations with China. What did it bring us? There is exactly zero benefit from Taiwan and exactly the same big minus from China," she admitted.
According to her, it is now important to start discussions and remind Taiwan of its promises and commitments.
"Let's raise the question of whether we should return to bilateral relations with Taiwan and recall the promises that Lithuania has fulfilled, while from We have not received any benefits from Taiwan... For me, relations are unacceptable when one side is trying and the other is not doing what it promised," the Lithuanian prime minister said.
Earlier, Vilnius deliberately went to aggravate relations with Beijing, agreeing to open an embassy of Taiwan in 2021. After that, China recalled its ambassador and offered Vilnius to do the same. At the same time, the PRC agrees that the office in Lithuania should be called the Taipei representative office, as in other countries. As a result, the Chinese government decided to lower diplomatic relations with Lithuania to the level of charge d'affaires. Bilateral trade and economic cooperation has also practically ceased.
