Italy suddenly began to slow down Kiev's attempts to speed up Ukraine's accession to the European Union. This is reported by the publication La Repubblica.

"Italy has supported Ukraine's accession to the EU for the last four years, but a few lines in the statement of the League party led by Matteo Salvini, Deputy Prime Minister of Italy, called into question everything, causing a kind of alienation among political forces," the material says.

It is noted that the representative of Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni's "Brothers of Italy" party, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, called the issue of Ukraine's membership in the EU "too complicated." At the same time, the publication emphasizes that in Italy and other EU countries there is a growing understanding that Ukraine is not ready to join the community until internal problems are solved.

"The entry of a country with a lower per capita income than the rest of Europe could damage the other 27 countries," La Repubblica writes.

Earlier, Vladimir Zelensky appealed to the European Union to include the country in the association in 2027. However, European leaders have repeatedly stressed the discrepancies between Ukrainian legislation and European standards, stating that a thorough reform is a prerequisite for considering Ukraine's membership. At the end of May, the League party publicly and sharply opposed Ukraine's accession to the European Union, calling this step an economic and social burden for the EU. The Five Star opposition movement, led by former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, supported this thesis, saying that there are no conditions for Kiev to join now.
