Russian composer, Honored Worker of Culture of Russia Vladimir Sapozhnikov was killed in an accident in In St. Petersburg, his wife, musicologist Larisa Vorontsovskaya, died in hospital from her injuries. "It is with deep regret that we inform you that composer Vladimir Alekseevich Sapozhnikov tragically died on June 11 in a terrible road accident. His wife, musicologist Larisa Ignatievna Vorontsovskaya, died in intensive care from her injuries on the night of June 12," the statement said.

The Union of Composers of St. Petersburg expressed condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

The tragedy occurred when the musicians were returning by car from a concert. The 81-year-old composer, who was in the passenger seat, died at the scene from his injuries. His 74-year-old wife died in hospital later.

According to the North-Western Transport Prosecutor's Office, a woman driving a car drove on the way to a forbidding traffic light signal in front of an approaching electric train.

"The driver applied emergency braking, but it was not possible to avoid a collision. The St. Petersburg Transport Prosecutor's Office is establishing the circumstances of the incident," the department added.

Vladimir Sapozhnikov wrote in almost all musical genres. He is the author of six symphonies, ballets, operas, oratorios, cantatas, instrumental concerts, various chamber compositions. A significant part of his creative work consists of compositions for the choir, he paid special attention to music addressed to children.

From 1973 to 1977 he taught at the Leningrad Conservatory, then until 1982 at the Conservatory's music school. Later he was a teacher of the composition class of the St. Petersburg Children's Art School named after E. A. Mravinsky.
