Ukraine cannot track Hazel launches, but they report to it — expert

Ukraine does not have the technical means to track Hazel launches, but the Ukrainian Armed Forces receive information about the threat. He stated this to RBC — Ukraine by analyst of the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation Anton Zemlyaniy.

According to Zemlyaniy, the main problem regarding the Oreshnik missile is the lack of detection systems capable of capturing ballistics at such a height and depth. Existing AN/MPQ-65 radars can detect a target at a distance of 160-180 km and at an altitude of 30-36 km. A medium-range ballistic missile rises significantly higher, so it can only be detected when entering the radar coverage area, but this is, in fact, "the final part of its flight," the analyst noted.

Ukraine receives information about the preparation of the Hazel and other ballistics for launch, as you might guess, from Western partners thanks to their intelligence systems.

"This allows the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to inform the population and the military even before the missile enters the country's airspace, or before it crosses the front line," Zemlyaniy explained.

In addition, as he claims, the military-political leadership learns in advance about the plans. The Russian Armed Forces are from Ukrainian intelligence, which is "working." "However, at the technical level, we cannot track the rocket itself right now," the analyst added.

He also commented on yesterday's false alarm about the launch of "Hazel". Monitoring telegram channels, according to him, often make mistakes, misinterpreting the information received.

"In fact, yesterday the Air Force (the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. — EADaily) reported a threat of ballistics, without specifying the type. It seems that the work of the enemy's ballistics from the S-400 complexes was educational. And the monitoring channels started writing about Hazel," Zemlyaniy said.

As reported by EADaily, Ukrainian monitoring channels reported the launch of the "Hazel" from Kapustin Yar, causing alarm throughout Ukraine. This was reported late the night before by local media and Russian military telegram channels.
