"Bread of the Negro" — for the name of chocolate activists attacked a bakery in Austria, writes Die Welt.

The family-owned confectionery Zehrer in Austrian Klagenfurt has existed since 1763 and is a city landmark. Recently, there has been a fierce dispute around her because of one of the confectionery's branded products - chocolate called "Negerbrot", which translates from German as "Negro Bread".

For many years, the name of the chocolate, which was in demand among customers, did not bother anyone, but recently it has been widely discussed in social networks. The pastry shop has already faced an act of vandalism — activists painted the facade of the building with spray paint. They claim that this is a racist name associated with the colonial past.

However, the pastry shop does not intend to give up.

"Whole generations know him by this name and associate childhood memories with him. This name is not used in a derogatory sense. It would be pointless to answer elderly customers that there is no such chocolate if they specifically ask for it," one of the employees told the Kleine Zeitung newspaper.

He believes that over time, "the word will simply fall out of use."

Local authorities also opposed the actions of activists. Deputy Mayor of Klagenfurt Patrick Jonke called the incident "a targeted attack on a traditional family business."

In response to the attack, the pastry shop put up a new product on its website called "Negerbrot Linksextreme Edition Zartbitter" ("Negro Bread". The publication "Left extremists". Bitter chocolate). Activists say they will continue to fight, noting that "childhood memories do not justify racism."
