Moscow does not recognize Washington's unilateral expansion of the borders of the continental shelf. This was stated by the Russian delegation at the 31st session of the Assembly of the International Seabed Authority (IOM).
"The Russian Federation does not recognize the established in 2023. Washington unilaterally imposed the external borders of the "extended" shelf due to the inconsistency of this step with established international practice and non-compliance with relevant procedures. We again called on the United States to become a party to the 1982 Convention," the message published in the Telegram channel of the Legal Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
During the speech, the delegation also stressed the great importance of the IOM activities as a key mechanism for implementing the provisions of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in terms of regulating the development of the resources of the area.
