Democracy in German: Germany has figured out how to deal with the opposition

The German authorities have come up with a plan to contain the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Politico writes about this.

According to the publication, if the AfD succeeds in the elections to the regional parliament of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, the party will be able to form a regional government for the first time in its history. Thus, representatives of Alternative for Germany will be able to participate in the work of interregional ministerial conferences.

It is noted that as one of the ways to contain the AfD, the German authorities proposed isolating party members within the framework of interregional ministerial conferences. Another method was proposed by the Minister of the Interior of Thuringia, the Social Democrat Georg Mayer. He called on the AFD representatives to be blocked from accessing certain information, primarily related to measures to combat right-wing extremism.

In addition, the interlocutors of the publication called an additional tool a mechanism directly provided for by the country's constitution — the right of the federal government to appoint a commissioner with the authority to give instructions to regional authorities.

Recall, against the backdrop of the failures of the current German government, the AfD is gaining popularity in German society. At the same time, a number of the party's proposals cause outrage even in the EU. So, earlier, AdG co-chair Alice Weidel said that if the political force comes to power, she intends to withdraw Germany from the eurozone and the Schengen Agreement.
