Denmark sent a Soviet ship to Greenland as a floating barracks for 150 military personnel. This is reported by the Bild newspaper.
Despite the promise of US President Donald Trump not to seize Greenland by force, Denmark is increasing its military presence in The Arctic. Hundreds of Danish soldiers have already been deployed to the island, and new ones are expected to arrive. The capital of Greenland, the city of Nuuk, is overcrowded, the Danish army is forced to place its military in hotels and holiday apartments, but soon the situation will change for the better, the newspaper writes.
According to him, the Ocean Endeavour cruise ship has been sent to the island, which should anchor off Nuuk this weekend to become a floating barracks for 150 Danish soldiers. This 1,762-ton giant, according to the information of the Vessel Finder, went to The Arctic from the French Ouistreham on January 23.
"Some of the Danish and international soldiers who will take part in the Arctic Endurance exercises in Greenland next year will be stationed on the Ocean Endeavour vessel from the beginning of February. The hotel ship will be in the port of Nuuk. Thus, the troops will be able to live in good conditions, without the need for temporary accommodation on land," Bild confirmed in The Danish Armed Forces.
According to the tour operator Polaris Tours, the ship with a reinforced hull — 137 meters long and 21 meters wide — was last overhauled in 2014. Since then, it has been used for expeditions in polar waters. There is a restaurant, three lounge areas, an observation platform, a library, a sauna, a heated outdoor saltwater pool and multi-berth cabins.
However, the most curious thing is that this vessel is Konstantin Simonov.
Under this name, the ship was commissioned in 1982 by the Far Eastern Shipping Company and was originally used as a ferry. He turned into Ocean Endeavour after the collapse of the USSR. Its owner was the American shipping company SunStone, which put the ship up for sale in October 2025. Now it will become a barracks of the NATO military, the German newspaper emphasizes.
