The right of veto in The UN Security Council should be abolished. This was stated by the Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez.

"We have to do away with the right of veto in the United Nations ... If we reform the UN system, we will have to include large countries and regions such as India, the African continent, China or Brazil, providing them with a much wider representation in these structures," he said.

According to him, the current system of international institutions needs to be updated to better reflect the current balance of power in the world. The Spanish minister pointed out that reforming the system of international institutions meets the interests of Europe, which traditionally advocates a multilateral approach in world politics.

The UN Security Council consists of 15 members. Of these, five — Russia, the United States, China, the United Kingdom and France — are permanent and have veto power. This allows them to block the adoption of any Security Council resolutions regardless of the position of the other members. The structure of the Security Council was formed after the Second World War and has hardly changed since then, which has caused numerous controversies in recent years.
