Record levels of the spread of sexually transmitted diseases have been recorded in Europe. This is evidenced by new data from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

According to the ECDC, in 2024, the number of cases of both diseases reached the highest level in more than 10 years. Thus, the number of cases of gonorrhea increased to 106,331 — by 303 percent compared to 2015. During the same period, the number of syphilis cases more than doubled, reaching 45,557 cases.

The ministry said that the increase in the number of cases of transmission of infection is partly due to "widening gaps in testing and prevention," and called for urgent measures. According to Bruno Ciancio, head of the agency's department for diseases transmitted directly from person to person and preventable with vaccines, the number of cases of congenital syphilis — "when the infection is transmitted directly to newborns, which can lead to lifelong complications" — almost doubled between 2023 and 2024. For example, Spain had the highest number of confirmed cases of gonorrhea and syphilis among the European countries participating in the 2024 study: 37,169 and 11,556 cases, respectively.

Recall, in recent years, the countries The EU has flooded with migrants. A number of experts attribute what is happening to both the problem of migration and non-traditional sexual relations, which are supported by the EU authorities.
