Slovenia will become the first country in the EU to move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This is reported by the European media.
It is reported that the new Slovenian government headed by Prime Minister Janez Jansa plans to freeze the recognition of Palestine and move its embassy to Jerusalem. This step radically changes the country's foreign policy course and makes Slovenia the first state of the European Union to decide to transfer a diplomatic mission to Jerusalem.
According to Janshi, the decision of the previous center-left cabinet of Robert Golob, adopted in June 2024, is "illegal" and contrary to Slovenian law.
"Terrorism, extremism, the erosion of national identity and the growing geopolitical pressure are the problems that both countries face. Instead of moving away from each other, we should strengthen cooperation. Israel is not Europe's problem, but one of its most important allies," Jansha said.
In turn, Israeli Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Eli Cohen welcomed the decision of the Slovenian government. According to him, the cancellation of recognition of the Palestinian state and the relocation of the embassy to Jerusalem are "the right and important step" that reflects "true friendship and choosing the right side of history."
Recall, immediately after the approval of the new Cabinet of Ministers, the Palestinian flag was removed from the government building in Ljubljana. However, later the country's president Natasha Pirts Musar raised it over her residence in protest.
