The North-east of Germany "incorrectly" thinks about the "Nord Streams" — before the elections

On the eve of the elections to the regional parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, residents again confirmed that most of them are in favor of returning oil and gas from Russia. This is a clear trump card for the Alternative for Germany party, which has included the Nord Stream supply recovery point in the election program and is leading in the polls.

"The sharp increase in fuel prices continues to put strong pressure on businesses and individuals in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. But how can this problem be solved if Russia continues the war on Ukraine, and the United States is fighting against Iran? Many residents of the northeast believe that Germany should again use energy from Russia," writes the German Nordkurier with reference to a survey conducted by the INSA Consulere Institute for Public Opinion Research.

51% of respondents answered that they were in favor of resuming supplies, while 35% opposed it. Another 14% are undecided. The survey was conducted among thousands of voters from August 4 to August 11. And compared to March, support for Russian supplies gained another 1%.

Alternative for Germany spokesman Enrico Schult told the newspaper that the party supports the resumption of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, as well as the purchase of Russian oil for the PCK refinery.

"Good trade and economic relations can serve as a lever in negotiations on a peace treaty between Russia and Ukraine. And one more thing: energy prices may be reduced," said a representative of the party, which, according to September polls, has the support of 35% of voters in the federal state.

INSA director Herman Binkert considers the latest poll particularly interesting in relation to the potential electoral base of the CDU, whose leader is the current Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

"The majority of respondents intending to vote for the CDU support Russian gas and oil. This reveals another area of common interest between the voters of Alternative for Germany and the CDU," said Herman Binkert.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is located in the north-east of Germany and it is through its territory that the "Northern Streams" pass. On September 26, 2022, sabotage occurred on gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea and only one of the four lines remained intact. In addition, German authorities and companies are actively using the infrastructure of projects to organize LNG terminals and re-equip pipelines for hydrogen transportation.

As EADaily reported, in the German Lubmin near the Baltic Sea, the dismantling of the power plant that heated the gas in the Nord Stream begins this week. The equipment will be taken to Ukraine. Naftogaz will carry out dismantling and transportation at its own expense. The district group of the party "Alternatives for Germany" failed to stop the work.
